Tutto Italiano Benvenuto a Tutto Italiano The first four Italian explorers of the American continent were Columbus, Caboto, Vespucci, and da Verrazzano. Of course, Columbus
didn't set foot on the mainland, but his explorations opened the western sea to the other men – Caboto, who sailed for
England; Vespucci, for Spain and Portugal; and da Verrazzano, for France. Since then, the impact of Italians on America has
been substantial – from other explorers, missionaries, educators, and the millions of immigrants who have made America
their home.
When the Italian immigrants came to America,
many stayed on the East Coast, but others traveled west, with some settling in between. Certain states are synonymous with
a large Italian American population, but almost every state in America has at least one Italian cultural center or a university
that offers Italian studies. WisItalia is a Wisconsin organization
established in 2000 to “promote the teaching of the Italian language in WI schools,” and with a mission to “educate
the general public about the Italian language and culture.” Its website, wisitalia.com, is an incredible resource with information about educational books; links to numerous Italian-related
websites including some wonderful tours; and Italy Web Albums, an exquisite collection of photographs of Italy. Check out this album of beautiful doors and windows in Italy. One of the educational resources
on wisitalia.com is Edizioni Farinelli, a publishing company that specializes in “Italian teaching and reading materials for English
speakers learning Italian.” The company offers a “Film Study Series” that features popular Italian movies
with accompanying texts to assist in learning the Italian language. For parents, combining the “Italian Track Series”
and the “Film Study Series” is a great way to introduce your children to Italian culture and language. In Utah, the Italian Center of the West is “dedicated to spreading the best of Italian arts, culture and education.” In the mid-1800s,
Italian immigrants traveled to Utah as part of a Mormon ministry; later, they arrived in Utah to work in the mines and on
the railroads. At About Us under Beliefs, you’ll find a short list of some of the greatest people in Arts, Literature, Music,
Fashion, and Film; and the Italian influence on food, architecture, and history. The land of our ancestors has made an impressive
impact on the world. As Italian Americans, we should be proud of our nationality and must educate others about it. According to the 2000 U.S. Census, 3.2 percent of Wisconsin’s population and 2.6
percent of Utah’s population have Italian ancestry. Next year, everyone will receive the short Census form. An upsurge
in the nationwide percentage of those of Italian ethnicity could be very helpful in bringing attention to our nationality.
This, in turn, could assist in bringing Italian American history into schools, which will help expand knowledge of our
culture and combat negative stereotypes. The Census form has an area for “ethnicity;” if it applies to you,
be sure to write in “Italian.”
Three Remarkable Italians What other nationality can
claim three men as great as Dante, da Vinci, and Galileo? Each is extraordinary, extensively studied, and acclaimed for his
work. Galileo Exhibit (Video) Through January 3, 2010, the San
Diego Air & Space Museum in California is exhibiting The Da Vinci Experience, “Machines designed and described by Leonardo da Vinci.” The exhibit
showcases “fully-functional and interactive models of Da Vinci's creations” created by “a group of Florentine
artisans [who] have spent the last half century studying the original notes and drawings of Da Vinci's various projects.” Also in
California (several hundred miles north of San Diego), the Bakersfield Museum of Art is featuring an exhibit of some of Dante’s
words in the Divine Comedy interpreted into art by Salvador Dali. In Salvador Dali: The Divine Comedy, 30 of Dali’s wood engravings will be on display until August 30th.
What’s in a Name? Why is the media so quick to
use Ponzi Scheme instead of Pyramid Scheme? Why does RICO mean the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act? Why
is Machiavellian synonymous with deceit? Yes, Ponzi was a swindler, but his fraudulent deeds
of the 1920s have been surpassed by many Americans who are not of Italian heritage. Does using the term Ponzi Scheme
continue to perpetrate negative Italian stereotypes? 10 seconds in Ponzi
video [left] attorney for Madoff victims quotes Pyramid Scheme. The Life of Carlo Ponzi (Incorrect metaphor analogy to the U.S. Social Security System.
Social Security is a government TAX on Labor is not a government entitlement)
Ponzi or Pyramid Scheme? Earlier this year, the media clamor was all about
Madoff and his “Ponzi” scheme. In May, I questioned why Italian names are so often associated with illegal or
negative activities, and included a link to Mr. Carlo Ponzi: The Person vs. Concept, written by Tommy Tucci. Several weeks ago, Tommy sent an email with a
link to his letter, “Outrageous Stereotyping of Italian Americans ‘Mr. Carlo Ponzi.’” Tommy’s
letter, as does his article above, takes note of the “scams“ that Wall Street uses to manipulate the American
public. Interesting reading. Tommy’s letter is featured on page 22 in the October newsletter (PDF) of the Italian American Police Society of New
Jersey. pyramid scammers in US history. The
Italian American Police Society of New Jersey I clicked on the link to Tommy’s letter, and, after looking
at the neat badge with the American and Italian flags, my eyes were drawn to a picture of Christopher Columbus. I scrolled
down to start to read about Columbus, but “New York City Columbus Day Parade” got my attention; and I read a behind-the-scenes
account of the NJ police officers trip to participate in the parade.
I read about the
numerous charitable events and fundraisers the members of the IAPSNJ participate in, the social activities, the Polizia di Stato, celebrations for Italian American Heritage Month, the support, the camaraderie, congratulations
and condolences, new laws; and through it all, numerous articles about Columbus and other notable Italians. The newsletter
is a wonderful tribute, not only for showing how the service of police officers extends way beyond their line of duty, but
also for so actively promoting Italian culture and heritage. Reading the copyright
notice, and not wanting to have any “trouble with the law,” I contacted the editor for permission to link to Tommy’s
letter. I commented on how impressed I was with the newsletter, mentioned that Thirty-One Days of Italians might be a good
source of information for future newsletters, and provided the link to past issues of Tutto Italiano posted at the
Italian Historical Society of America. One email led to another and Pat, the editor, wrote that he would be
mentioning Thirty-One Days of Italians and the Italian Historical Society of America in the January issue of the IAPSNJ newsletter. But there’s more … After further correspondence, Pat wrote that a link to Thirty-One Days of Italians had been added to the newsletter
website page of the IAPSNJ. Check it out! Thank you, Pat, for letting the members of the IAPSNJ know about Thirty-One Days of Italians. Visit the IAPSNJ to learn more about the organization and for its public service messages.

What came first,
RICO or the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act? It’s said that the acronym RICO was taken from the lead
character in Little Caesar, the quintessential mobster film that laid the groundwork for so many others of its genre.
In 2000, Little Caesar was included in the United States National Film Registry because it is “culturally,
historically, or aesthetically significant.” This film is significant in perpetrating Italian stereotypes.
Niccolò Machiavelli was a patriot and philosopher, yet his work, The Prince (How many U.S. politicians have read
this?), has been misinterpreted as Machiavelli’s ideology on how to run a government. His book, Discourses on Livy,
is considered to more accurately convey his thoughts on politics and is said to be an important work about a republic
government.

FIAT – Another Misnomer Car manufacturers have
been in the news lately, and the news about FIAT is good. The company, founded in 1899, is the largest manufacturer of vehicles (includes Alfa Romero,
Ferrari, Lancia, and Maserati) in Italy; and constructs commercial and agricultural vehicles, machinery, and components. The
FiatGroup also owns a publishing and communications business that produces Torino’s daily newspaper, La Stampa.
Fiat manufactures and sells cars in many countries throughout the world – Africa, Brazil,
Egypt, India, Russia, Spain, and Eastern Europe – and has won the European Car of the Year Award more than any other
car manufacturer. In the late 1960s, Fiat began to sell its cars in America. Although the cars were mechanically sound, numerous
problems occurred – among them a lack of parts and qualified mechanics – causing FIAT to turn into an acronym
for repeated repairs. Fix It Again Tony. The cars were removed from the American market in the
mid-1980s. In a new agreement made with Chrysler, Fiat is in line to become one of the largest car manufacturers in the world.
Bits and Pieces Italia Much More (Great video for tourism in Italy) A few weeks go, I received the latest catalog from American Girl. I have not heard from the company since
I wrote in September 2008; but did read in November that its parent company, Mattel, was reducing its workforce by 1,000 because
of the economy and the costs of goods. Still, an Italian American doll belongs in its collection of Historical Characters. Please write to Ellen L. Brothers, the president of American Girl and let her know that Mattel should
offer an Italian American Doll. Here is the address and more information.
Another project is a series of articles
that chronicle the Italian immigrant, from "Life in Italy" to "Becoming American"
(this does have a page on my website). A few weeks ago, I watched a video lecture presented by Frank
Sorrentino, a Professor of Political Science at St. Francis College in Brooklyn, New York.
Frank gave an excellent overview of the history of Italy and Italian immigrants in relationship to media bias of Italian
Americans. I hope all my readers will view it, and that they will view it with others—especially their children—and
discuss it. I asked Frank to recommend a few books as companions to his lecture. He mentioned
Blood of My Blood by Richard Gambino, La Storia: Five Centuries of the Italian American Experience by Jerre
Mangione and Ben Morreale, Ethnic America by Thomas Sowell, and The Review of Italian American Studies by
Frank Sorrentino and Jerome Krase.

Merry Christmas The first Nativity was created by St. Francis of Assisi in Greccio, a small village on a mountain north of Rome. In 1223, St. Francis filled a small cave with
some straw, a crib, and a few live animals. The scene attracted the villagers, and continues to attract thousands each year.
Today, the setting remains the same, and offers a glimpse into the past and a look at the life of St. Francis. If you’ll
be visiting Rome, take The Saint Francis Walk, a route of paths and roads that St. Francis traveled in the Rieti Valley. (The website also offers
a virtual tour.) Venice is Sinking It’s said that Venice was first settled by mainlanders fleeing from invaders after the fall of Rome. The small marshy islands
of the lagoon sheltered the new inhabitants, and made it difficult for the warriors to find them. Eventually, the islets were
joined together by bridges, and buildings were erected on pilings buried deep into the foundation of the islets.Approximately 400 bridges connect 118 islets, creating the most extraordinary city in the world. Some of the
islands a boat ride away are Murano, known for its glass; Burano, known for its lace; and San Giorgio, the site of San Giorgio Maggiore, designed by Andrea Palladio. Throughout its history, Venice
has had to deal with the sea, and while the sea brought power and prosperity to the city, it has also brought a huge concern
about Venice’s infrastructure. The water level of Venice has risen and its buildings are also sinking. The first floors
of building are no longer used and the windows and doors have been sealed. After the
great flood in 1966, scientists, engineers, politicians, and others began discussions on how to prevent another major flood.
In the 1980s, the MOSE Project, Modulo Sperimentale Elettromeccanico (Experimental Electromechanical Module), was
developed as a way to prevent major flooding in Venice. The Italian Government approved it in 2003, and work is expected to
be completed in 2012. The MOSE Project is a series of underwater gates that rise with the threat of high seas. This past
September, a conference was held in New York City (view video to see how the gates will work) to discuss the possibilities of using the MOSE project
to keep New Orleans safe from flooding. Venice is Shrinking The waters are rising, the buildings are
sinking, and the population is shrinking. The population of Venice is around 60,000 and has been steadily declining since its peak of 164,000
in 1931. Part of the reason is the high cost of living, part is high tourism, part is the commercial/retail industry, and
part is the difficulty of transportation. Back in the States The Los Angeles Historic Italian Hall Foundation, along with several sponsors,
is presenting the exhibit “Sunshine and Struggle: The Italian Experience in Los Angeles 1827-1927.” The exhibit, at the Renaissance Building in San Pedro, runs through
December 31st. The Museum is also seeking donations of various items to add to its collections. In
New York’s Little Italy, the exhibit “Neapolitan Presepio,” will be at the Italian American Museum until January 31, 2010. The exhibit includes a collection of photographs of Nativity Scenes and an
original Presepio (from Naples), created in the style of the eighteenth century. On
Sunday, January 17th at the Garibaldi Meucci Museum on Staten Island, Aldo Mancusi, founder of the Enrico Caruso Museum in Brooklyn, will present select recordings from his vast collection of Caruso songs.
(Caruso is an Honorary Member of Thirty-One Days of Italians.) Gifts
with Bountiful Returns Give the gift of Italian vegetables for Christmas. There is still time to order a beautiful
Tuscan, Roman, or Venetian gift seed collection from Seeds of Italy. (See Item Two.) Gift certificates are also available. Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays? What do you say? Sometimes it’s more convenient to just
say “Happy Holidays” because it covers all the religions and cultures, but December 25th is a day of celebration;
and if businesses are promoting their goods or services for that day, then it should be mentioned. I’ve received several
emails about keeping Christmas alive by saying “Merry Christmas,” but “Happy Holidays” also has a
place. So maybe it’s okay to say both?"Merry Christmas, A Joyous New Year,
and Happy Holidays." Buon anno, buon tutto, buona vita, Janice Therese Mancuso

Italian Historical Society of America
A Brief History
The Italian Historical Society
of America
The Italian
Historical Society of America was founded by John N LaCorte at Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York in 1949. The Society was created at a time when
the public perception of the Italian culture had been greatly overshadowed by the notoriety of a number of celebrated criminal
personalities of Italian descent. It was John N. LaCorte's belief that these negative stereotypes could be overcome by popularizing
the lives of the many Italians who have made significant contributions to Western Civilization. He also believed that Americans
of Italian decent, as well as people of all other ethnic backgrounds, could be inspired by the great achievements of those
who have preceded them. Inspiratio per Exemplum, "Inspiration through Example", was the theme that became
the motto of the Society, and which is proudly included in its logo to this day
On November 20, 1991 John N. LaCorte passed away leaving
a great legacy to the future, having made himself a living example of the Society's motto. He was an inspiration of unbounded
energy and ideas which often moved mountains against negative opinions and self-assured convictions.. He fought against odds
which others said were impossible to overcome: When he knew he was right he would never take "no" for an answer.
He kept pushing until the end he desired was achieved. In this context, his magnum opus was achieving, against a sea of criticism,
the naming of the bridge which spans Brooklyn and Staten Island, the ocean gateway to New York, after the Florentine navigator, Giovanni da Verrazzano, the first European to sail up the river which was later named after Henry Hudson.
Knowing that Henry Hudson's arrival in New York Harbor was
preceded by some fifty years by Giovanni da Verrazzano, and that in fact Hudson had utilized some of Verrazzano's navigational
charts, LaCorte fought to have this span named after the true discoverer of New York Harbor. The objections were many and
varied including the opinion that no one will ever use the name "Verrazzano" because it is too difficult to pronounce.
(The official name of the span is Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge. The Society's founder held his course and achieved the appropriate recognition
for this great explorer.
